Mission To Mars Card Pages Part 10 - The End

To recap:  These are the cards I would take with me if I could take ten 9-card pages with me to Mars.
I decided that each part of my collection cannot have more than one page.  The cards must fit into a regulation page as far as height and width but I am taking liberties with how thick some of the cards are.

The last of the 10 pages features my favorite Non-Sport cards.

1964 Topps Beatles Black and White Series 2 #69
My all-time favorite band.  Topps issued several Beatles sets in the 1960's.  I got this card for $3 at a show.

1991 Impel Marvel #1
I have some other Spider-Man cards, including a 3-D hologram, but this one is the best one.

1995 Topps Animaniacs Stickers #12
I was a huge fan of the Animaniacs.  These pigeons are from the Goodfeathers, which was a parody of the movie Goodfellas.  The most famous Animaniacs were Pinky and the Brain but I liked the Goodfeathers the most; although, Chicken Boo is also up there.

2008 Donruss Amercana #227
Americana was a set that featured TV, movie and pop culture celebrities.  The cards from 201-250 featured classic movie and TV stars.  Humphrey Bogart is my favorite classic Hollywood star.  I love Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, Key Largo and just about anything else he appeared in.

2008 Topps Star Wars Clone Wars Stickers #29.
Yoda about to kick ass.  What more can one ask for.

2013 Panini Golden Age Museum Age
Blues Brothers.  Animal House.  The Samurai.  Cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger!  He was gone too soon.

Psych Season 1-4 Authentic Wardrobe Dual
Psych was one of my favorite shows and I miss it.

Game of Thrones Autographs
It's killing me that I don't have HBO right now so I'm missing the new episodes.

Conleth Hill as Lord Varis.
Lard Varis was the kingdom's spymaster until he was forced to flee with Tyrion Lannister.  A great character.

Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark
The long suffering oldest child of the Stark clan.

I hope everyone enjoyed my Mission to Mars pages.  It's been fun.

Mission To Mars Card Pages Part 9 - Cards for Everyone

To recap:  These are the cards I would take with me if I could take ten 9-card pages with me to Mars.
I decided that each part of my collection cannot have more than one page.  The cards must fit into a regulation page as far as height and width but I am taking liberties with how thick some of the cards are.

Page 9 includes cards from different sports.

Danica Patrick is my favorite driver in NASCAR.

I have a very small boxing collection.  The top 2 cards I purchased at a card show for $3 each.  The Evander Holyfield card is from Upper Deck's 1996 US Olympic set.

This card is from a set that featured former Olympians among other subjects.  I think it's neat, yes neat, to have an autograph of such a successful athlete.

My tennis collection features these two cards.  Bud Collins is most famous for his commentary at Wimbledon.

Mission To Mars Card Pages Part 8 - Hitting the Links

To recap:  These are the cards I would take with me if I could take ten 9-card pages with me to Mars.
I decided that each part of my collection cannot have more than one page.  The cards must fit into a regulation page as far as height and width but I am taking liberties with how thick some of the cards are.

When I told a friend that I would be talking about golf cards today he said "They make golf cards?"

They do indeed.

2001 Upper Deck #1
Tiger Woods popularity was the driving reason that Upper Deck decided to produce golf cards.  This is his rookie card.

2003 Upper Deck #48
Annika was the best female golfer in the world for several years.  She even appeared in a men's tournament.  Upper Deck added LPGA golfers for the first time in 2003.

2004 Upper Deck Promos #69
I have three promo cards from the 2004 set.  I think they came packaged with a price guide magazine that is no longer published.  I've seen a few of these online but not very many so I'm not sure how many were produced.

2012 SP Authentic Sign of the Times
Johnny Miller is best known now as an accouncer for NBC but he was a great golfer in the 1970's and won the US Open in 1973 and the British Open in 1976.

2012 SP Game Used Edition Tour Gear Combos
Paula Creamer is my current favorite LPGA player.  She won the US Women's Open in 2010.  She is known for wearing pink so this swatch is not surprising.

2013 Goodwin Champions Memorabilia
After many years of trying to land a Tiger memorabilia card in a pack I finally succeeded in 2013.

2013 Panini Golden Age Historic Signatures
As it says on the back of this card Jan was "golf's first pin-up girl."  I like the design of this card and the fact that the autograph is "on-card" and not on a sticker.

2013 SP Game Used Tour Gear Trios
Nick Faldo is one of my favorite golfers of all time.  All three of these golfers won majors with Faldo capturing 3 Masters and 3 British Opens.  Oddly enough, Duval seemed to be a better golfer when he was heavier.  When he started working out and got in shape his game struggled.

2013 SP Game Used Tour Gear Trios
This is, quite simply, one of the jewels of my entire card collection.  Collectively, these three greats won 35 major tournaments, including 13 Masters.

--------------

Golf is one of the major parts of my current collecting pattern.

I'm not sure why everyone seems to be hating on Tiger Woods so much for not playing in tournaments while he is trying to get his game back in shape, but the media loves to stir things up so I'm sure we'll be seeing various speculative stories until he wins another tournament, which I am sure he will.

Mission To Mars Card Pages Part 7 - Kicking the Ball Around

To recap:  These are the cards I would take with me if I could take ten 9-card pages with me to Mars.
I decided that each part of my collection cannot have more than one page.  The cards must fit into a regulation page as far as height and width but I am taking liberties with how thick some of the cards are.

Page 7 represents my soccer collection.  I've been collecting soccer for many years and regularly get up early on weekend mornings to watch the Premier League on NBC Sports Network.

1990 Pro Set England #194
Vinny played for several years in England's top division.  Most of you probably recognize him from the many movies and television roles that he has had since his retirement from playing.  My favorite is as the lead soccer thug in Eurotrip.

1991 Pro Set Scotland #89 Tommy Turner
Tommy went on to a successful career in the adult diaper industry.

1996 Upper Deck USA Olympics #112
Mia helped bring women's soccer into the public conscience in the 1990's.  She is considered by many to be the greatest female soccer player ever.

2009-10 Panini Super Strikes Champions League
Lionel is my favorite non-English player so I root for Barcelona.

2008 Upper Deck MLS #61
You have to be famous to have your name included in a movie title.  Marrying a Spice Girl put him over the top.  His presence on the Galaxy made them my favorite MLS team.

2012 Goodwin Champions Memorabilia
My favorite goaltender.  Besides being the starter for the US National team Tim plays for Everton in the Premier League.

2013 Topps Premier League Green #118
I started rooting for Chelsea when my sister lived there a few years ago.  John is the anchor of Chelsea's defense and my favorite player on the team.

2014 Panini Prizm World Cup #142
Wayne is my favorite player on my favorite team, Manchester United.  I watched him score a goal against Tottenham this morning.  He is the first player in Premier League history to score 10 or more goals in 11 straight seasons.

2014 Topps MLS English Footballer
This is from an insert set in the 2014 MLS set.  It is based on the design from 1977 Topps English Footballer.  I will eventually try to complete this set.  Thierry Henry retired after the 2014 season.  He was a star on the undefeated 2003-04 Premier League champions Arsenal.

Mission To Mars Card Pages part 6

To recap:  These are the cards I would take with me if I could take ten 9-card pages with me to Mars.
I decided that each part of my collection cannot have more than one page.  The cards must fit into a regulation page as far as height and width but I am taking liberties with how thick some of the cards are.

Next up is basketball.  I rarely watch basketball anymore and I recently realized that the NBA lost me as a big fan when they started allowing zone defense.

1952-53 Wheaties
I don't know why I love this card so much but I just think it is seriously cool.

1985-86 Star #83
Star distributed cards in team sets at hobby stores.  I got this card out of a box of Crunch & Munch.  It was a great pull for me since Vern was a star at UGA and played on their 1983 Final Four team.

1986-87 Fleer #91
This was the first widely distributed NBA set in a few years so there are many rookie cards in the set.  This is a great card of my second favorite Hawk.

1986-87 Fleer Stickers #11
This is my earliest card of my favorite basketball player.  I saw him in a few games at UGA and was disappointed when he got drafted by the Jazz.  When he was traded to the Hawks before his rookie season started I was elated.  He led the NBA in scoring in the 1985-86 season.

1988-89 Kenner Starting Lineup
This card came packed with a figure that is what most people collected.  The card were an afterthought.  I was a huge fan of the Lakers in the 1980's.

1989 Sports Illustrated For Kids #23
Each issue of SI For Kids featured a page of nine cards that could be separated.  I don't remember who the other players in the sheet were but I bough the March 1989 issue for this card.

1996 Topps USA National Women's Team #3
Teresa Edwards starred at UGA in the mid-1980's and appeared in five Olympics.

2000-01 Topps Gold Label NBA Finals Jersey #2A
Glen led Michigan to their only NCAA Championship in 1989 and then went on to have a long NBA career.  He won his only NBA title with the Laker's in 2000.  I have two other cards from this set and will eventually complete it.

2000-01 Topps Gold Label Home Court Advantage #2
This may be my favorite insert set of all-time in any sport.  Another set that I will eventually try to complete.  There were printed on laminated wood.

The Atlanta Spirit group completely turned me off from the Hawks.  I was on Steve Belkin's side regarding Joe Johnson.

Mission To Mars Card Pages Part 5

To recap:  These are the cards I would take with me if I could take ten 9-card pages with me to Mars.
I decided that each part of my collection cannot have more than one page.  The cards must fit into a regulation page as far as height and width but I am taking liberties with how thick some of the cards are.

And now it's time to take the ice:

1980-81 Topps #22
One of the heroes of the 1980 Miracle On Ice, Jim actually started his career with the Atlanta Flames.  I remember watching his first Flames game on TV.  The OPC cards from 1980-81 did not have the USA logo in the top corner.  This set featured black scratch off material over the player's name and are not considered mint if scratched but I had to scratch my whole set because it annoyed me not seeing the player's name on them.

1990-91 Upper Deck #54
No hockey page is complete without the Great One.  I chose this card of Wayne because I really like
Upper Deck's first hockey set.

1993-94 Atlanta Knights #22
The Atlanta Knights were the top minor league affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning.  They featured a female goalie, Manon Rheaume, who appeared in two games.  I attended the game that she started.  The Knights won a league championship in 1994.  Like every Atlanta hockey team they ended up moving to Canada.

2001-02 Bowman Youngstars Relics
Dany Heatley and Ilya Kovalchuk were to be the long term anchors of the Atlanta Thrashers.  That fell apart when Heatley was in a car accident and was badly injured.  He was later traded to Ottawa.

2001-02 Topps Chrome #149
This is a rookie card of my all-time favorite hockey player.  Ilya is the all-time franchise leader in Goals and Assists.  He tied for league lead in goals in the 2003-04 season.

2001-02 Upper Deck Vintage #275
My other Kovalchuk rookie card.

2002-03 Be A Player First Edition Suffolk Downs #134
Be A Player gave cards to people that opened boxes at their booth during the show.  Among the cards that could be redeemed were 10 of each base card with a special stamp.  This one is numbered 08/10.  I got this pretty cheap off of e-bay.

2008-09 Upper Deck MVP 2-on-2 Jerseys
The last card in the page includes another young Thrashers star that was eventually traded.  Kari Lehtonen was a first round pick who became the Thrashers best goal tender.  He was traded to Dallas. This card also includes jersey swatches of Tomas Vokoun and Stephen Weiss of the Nashville Predators on the other side, thus the 2-on-2 concept.

---------------

I used to be a big hockey fan but all of the body-blows over the years finally took their toll:
Flames moved to Calgary
Knights moved to Quebec
Kovalchuk traded
Thrashers moved to Winnepeg
Kovalchuk "retired" and moved back to Russia.

I haven't watched a full hockey game in a couple of years and don't collect hockey cards actively anymore except I am filling in Atlanta Flames cards.

----------------

On a last note, the Thrashers were handicapped by being sold to the Atlanta Spirit ownership group, which rivals the Sterlings as the worst ownership group ever.  The really only wanted the Hawks but had to buy the Thrasher's also.  Maybe someday the NHL will return to Atlanta but, until then, I'll be watching other sports.
