Page six is all 1984. There were 3 major manufacturers and Topps and Fleer was also generating food sets and other oddities so there was plenty to buy.
This was between my junior and senior years of high school so any job many I made went toward cards.
Nestle Dream Team 3
Topps made these cards and Nestle packaged them with candy bars. I'm pretty sure I got this card from a local shop as I was more of a Snicker's fan.
O-Pee-Chee 212
Those crazy Canadians! They are more aboot hockey than baseball but I appreciate them having separate sets of cards.
Ralston Purina 13
This is a Topps product even though it's not a clone of the regular Topps cards like almost all of the others.
Seven-Eleven Coins 5
These discs came on the bottom of a Slurpee Cup inside a compartment on the underside. As Seven-Eleven was close to my house I bought a bunch of Slurpee's in 1984 (Cherry and Cola swirl.)
Topps 500
Here is the actual Topps cards from 1984, not to be confused with it's 1 million clones.
Topps Glossy Send-In 12
Apparently you were supposed to turn in game cards from the Topps packs for these cards. That was too much work for me so I think I got this on E-Bay.
Topps Stickers 198
I'm not a big fan of sticker sets in general but this one is shiny so I like it.
Topps Tiffany 500 and 399.
Topps sold these cards in full sets through dealers but I got mine on E-Bay. They go for a premium over the regular cards. The All-Star cards should really be first but then we wouldn't have that OCD calming stripe down the middle of the page.
The backs reinforce the cloning theme of Topps but show that the Ralson Purina card was oddball. You can see the big difference in card stock between the regular Topps issues and the Tiffanys. Seven-Eleven tried to pack a massive amount of information on the little disks so they can be hard to read for the visually challenged.
Next time we will finally get out of 1984.
On a side note, what was/is your favorite flavor of Slurpee (or the equivalent brand?)
Nice 1984 Topps trifecta! But my favorite card is the 7-11 coin. I loved collecting those when I was a kid. Favorite flavor or Slurpee? I'm like you, I mix Coke and cherry.
ReplyDeleteIn case you don't know, there's a parallel set to that Purina set where it says "Topps Cereal Series" on the top. It was designed to be inserted into generic-branded cereals, although they ended up putting them in the standard Ralston Purina boxes. I think a lot were sold to dealers as both versions seem to be relatively easy to find.
ReplyDeleteCoke Slurpees all the way! I get real joneses for them. Sadly, in Singapore, while there are 7-11s everywhere, if there are Slurpees there are always laoya (as we'd say, meaning "bad") flavors such as apple and mango. It's always hot there, I need my Coke Slurpees! I think when I feel comfortable going into stores again (I'm in the US now) one of my first stops will be the nearby Quick Chek for a Coke (off brand) Slurpee.
