I was going through a storage bin to see what I could get rid of and came across some 1970 Topps Super football cards I had no idea I had. There are a few Hall of Famers in this group so I was happily surprised.
I think a hobby shop owner gave them to me when I bought some boxes a few years ago but I'm not sure.
The cards are bigger than normal cards and on very thick stock.
Here's what I came across.
Card Number 3 - Bart Starr
The white card is there to provide perspective on the size of the Super cards.
This is my only Bart Starr card from when he was active.
Here is the card back. It's set up like a regular 1970 Topps card with the same color scheme.
7 - Deacon Jones
8 - Leroy Kelly
11 - Carl Eller
All three of these guys are in the Hall of FameD.
14 - Dick Butkus
22 - Gayle Sayers
Two more Hall of Famers. The Bears drafted them back-to-back in 1965.
23 - Tom Woodeschick
31 - Joe Kapp
The only two players in the group not in the Hall of Fame. Woodeschick was the 5th leading rusher in the league in 1969. Kapp led the Vikings to the Super Bowl that year.
Overall, I like these cards. I have some baseball examples also that I knew I had so these have been added to that stack.
There are other random things I've come across going through bins and boxes that I will write about in future installments.

Interesting. I didn't know there were football Topps Supers. ... Then again, my knowledge of football card history is not great.
ReplyDeleteThese are cool. My grandmother had these (actually the baseball version) in a coffee table. I used to look at them whenever I visited. Like NO... I don't think I knew about the football version, but I'm off to add a Bart Starr to my collection.
